Meet Sheffi
My Story...
I used to spend my time in the mountains helping to protect goats and sheep for the herders here in the Himalayas. I loved to run and play and roll around in the grass. But when I was about 5 years old I started to get tired and feel ill. I was weak and had no energy. My stomach hurt and started to gradually get bigger and bigger. Eventually it hurt just to walk around, I couldn’t sit or lie down comfortably either. One day a stranger came and found me on the street and took me to stay at a place with other dogs.
Now I feel better; the pain and discomfort has gone. Sometimes it comes back a little bit, but then the nice people at Manali Strays make it go away again.
Sheffi came to us in November 2020 weighing 45 kg despite his spine and hip bones protruding. He was suffering from ascites, a build up of abdominal fluid; in fact, Sheffi was carrying over 20 litres of. excess fluid.
We removed the excess fluid over several sessions and continue to monitor him. Occasionally the fluid starts to accumulate again so we have to remove it.
Once a very inactive dog, unable to run or join in with the other dogs playing, he now loves to run around the orchard playing and jumping around with his friends
Why can't Sheffi be released back to the streets?
Sheffi will always need medical attention. The fluid can start to build up at any time, at which point he would need to be sedated and have the fluid removed. To try to keep the fluid away he has to be given medication on a daily basis. This would be impossible if Sheffi was alone on the street.
