Bringing Veterinary Care to the Animals
To try and address the problem of no veterinary facilities in the more remote mountain villages, Manali Strays brings the vet to the animals. One of the best ways of doing this is to hold Animal Health Camps.
Animal Health Camps
Our Animal Health Camps involve travelling to specific villages on pre-arranged days. Local residents can bring pets or any street animals (that they can safely handle) to our camp.
Here our veterinary team provides a number of services to improve the lives of animals in the rural villages.
- Treat any medical issues
- Vaccinate animals
- Provide health check-ups
- Explain about animal welfare
- Teach basic health information about animals
Kasol - Our Flagship Animal Health Camp
Kasol is a tiny village of just 0.36 km2, located at an altitude of 1580 metres, in the Parvati Valley. Popular with tourists seeking some solitude from busy city life, Kasol and its surrounding area is home to an estimated 200 dogs. The nearest town is 30 km away; therefore, street animals often go without medical care at the early stages of illness or injury, when it is most treatable.
In August 2023, on International Dog Day – 26th August, we piloted the first of our Animal Health Camps in Kasol. Some of our team travelled to Kasol and spent the day vaccinating street dogs against rabies and treating any medical problems of pets and street dogs brought to our attention by the residents. On our first visit we vaccinated 71 dogs and 2 cats against rabies and saw numerous animals for health checks
We will soon be adding more locations to a regular schedule of Animal Health Camps.
Our proposed sites include:
- Kasol (Parvati Valley)
- Tandi/Keylong (where we have already sterilised 84 street dogs),
Villages in:
- Hallan Valley
- Lug Valley
- Kharal Valley
- Tirthan Valley
